Since the pandemic accessing mental health care is increasingly difficult. More people than ever before have experienced mass trauma and loss even as stigma about reaching out for help continues to decrease. In June of 2020, 40% of U.S. adults reported struggling with mental health or substance use. In 2021 nearly 14% of
youth (age 12-17) report suffering from at least one major depressive episode in the past year. With a shortage of mental health professionals in the region and too few trained intentionally to lead regional, state, and national mental health initiatives, the system remains outdated and overburdened.
